City Park Businesses on Colfax

It seems to be that one of the greatest parts of living the Denver lifestyle is the support we offer as a city to small businesses. The restaurants, shops, and venues that run the south border of the City Park neighborhood offer up everything you are searching for, and are locally owned and operated.

Beginning at the east end of the neighborhood, you have the Lowenstein Complex, which houses the Tattered Cover bookstore, Twist ‘n Shout record shop, Encore Restaurant, and the three-screen independent movie theater Neighborhood Flix. A tried and true Denver staple, the Tattered Cover bookstore offers floors of books to get lost in, while the neighboring record shop has enough aisles of music to make your head spin. Opened in 2007, Encore serves up great New American Cuisine in a laid-back setting. It’s a great place to catch a bite to eat before you head over to the Flix theater to catch both classic and new independent films.

Moving up past East High School, you come across the infamous hipster holdout, Rock Bar. Located in the first floor of a seedy Colfax motel, this place is famous for its cheap beer and good dancing music. You’ll find plenty of tight pants and ironic mustaches, but it’s all part of the charming Denver lifestyle. At the far end of the City Park strip, you’ll come across another outpost of hipsters at Lost Lake. It’s got the same attitude as Rock Bar, but mixed with the feeling of drinking cheap beer in your grandparent’s basement. People watching at either of these venues is unparalleled.

Past Rock Bar, are a bunch of really great little shops and restaurants. Plastic Chapel is the go-to spot for Denver’s graffiti-art inclined crowd, with hundreds of the vinyl toys collectors of such things seek out. The Shoppe has taken the cupcake craze and run with it, offering up delicious cakes and hot tea all day. If you’re in the mood for something a little more breakfast oriented, fret not: they have tons of cereals ready for the eating as well. In between the two lies The Fabric Lab, as bastion of light for the burgeoning DIY crowd Denver is harboring. With inspiration in art, design, and crafting, The Fabric Lab is a must-see for the amateur designer.

If you find yourself getting hungry, Colfax has you covered. From the numerous Greek enclaves courtesy of the city’s infamous Pete Contos (of Pete’s Kitchen and Satire Lounge fame) to the hard-to-miss Ethiopian restaurant named, aptly enough, Ethipoian Restaurant, every kind of food you want can be found on this stretch of road. The bar and restaurant combo at the Atomic Cowboy offers up killer slices from Fat Sully’s and breakfast from the Denver Biscuit Company. The latter also sports a food truck that can be found serving up their goods all over town. Across the street is the Mexican food hot spot Mezcal. Sister restaurants with Cherry Creek’s Tambien and South Broadway’s El Diablo, the food at Mezcal is not to be missed. The happy hour deals at Mezcal are especially awesome, with the later happy hour starting at ten, perfect for after the shows you can catch at the Bluebird Theater. Like Mezcal, the Bluebird has a few sister venues, but for small shows from as-yet-unknown bands, Bluebird is the place to be.

Any way you want to travel through this stretch of town is fine, but walking really gives you the time and focus to explore the wonder that is Colfax. Molded from left-overs, the City Park neighborhood shows the tenacity Denverites have for improving on what we have and making this city beautiful.
